This should be a great tournament. Both myself and Andrew will be attending. Hope to see a lot of players up in Green Bay.
ReplyDeleteJohn and his friends had a great time last year. It's a fun event, one of the few open tournaments. It's a nice hotel and Luke makes it a great event every year.

ReplyDeleteThe 1st round is complete. The GBO is a pure open tournament, so the 1st round generally went to the big ratings favorites. There was an upset though. Zeeshaun over Coons and unexpected draws Elger v J Zimmerman, Neitman v. Mariano and Schimdt v. Walter.

ReplyDeleteThe biggest upset of the tournament (not in ratings points) was Endsley (floored 2000) beating Santarius. Ellis (the 3rd seed)also drew in Round 3. Robin G continues to have a good topurnament with 2.5 /3. It sets up an interesting Round 4.

The marathon 4th round just ended. The SWCC members pushed their opponents to the max. Robin's game was the last game to complete (Vaja /Veech finished a only a few earlier). The 5th round started a few mintues ago, or about an 1 1/2 later than scheduled (waiting for all the games to finish). Lots of draws on the top boards, with only Parker, Ellis, and Santarius with wins.

The Vaja Veech game captived a lot of attention in the tournament room with odd positions and Vaja being under time pressure to meet the time controls.

ReplyDeleteRobin called to say that he had a 6-hour marathon game against Santarius in Round 4, 203 moves! Erik prevailed in the end, with seconds left. That's the game that delayed Round 5.
ReplyDeleteAshish, since you were on Board 1 in the last round, let us know how it turned out against Parker.
ReplyDeleteAt least one interesting discussion point came out. With 5 rounds and 72 players, there could have easily been 2 or 3 players with perfect scores. At what point should a TD use accelerated pairings?

ReplyDeleteMy game with Eric Santarius was 6 hours and 45 minutes long, and lasted 203 moves. It started as a rook & 3 pawns v. rook and 2 pawns. It ended with rook & 1 pawn v. rook. I probably should have held it, as it is a well known drawn position, and I did hold out some for many moves, however, time pressure finished me. Great game by Eric!
ReplyDeleteThere was also the fatigue factor involved in that long of a game. I was mentally done in and could not focus too much in my final round. That is not too take anything away from my final round opponent, who played very well.
