  18. As far as which Becker came first, that is a tough one. I believe they are also close in age as well as rating.

  19. I arrived in Wisconsin in January 1999 and immediately joined SWCC. Before that, I started my chess in California, in 1971, inspired by Fischer's 6-0's and a rainy Easter vacation.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I just turned 50 this past year. Also learned chess due to Fischermania, a friend taught me the moves in 1973. Within 2 and a half years, I reached 1805 and was twice Milwaukee Junior Champion (Lois Housfeld). Went to UWM at 17 on a soccer scholarship and didn't have time for chess any more. Played again in 1984&85 and reached approx. 2090. Took another 6 years off completely and resumed playing in 1991, rating dropped like a stone to 1913, slowly back up to peak of 2119. Quit again, and with the exception of a couple tnmts. around 2002 never looked at a board again until last year. As my recent results have shown, I have quite a lot of rust to shake off, but hope to again get in good form. My participation is limited due to my work schedule and other activities such as coaching but I hope I can come up with a good game every now and then. Just so you all know that I wasn't always this bad, my scalps have included Tate (draw with Black, his offer), Levit (twice), Penkalski, Williams (when he was really 2300, and no disrespect as he is and was a great player) Breider, Manion, Knutson, Cooper and quite a few other masters. I used to play quite an adventurous style of chess and hope to again as I get back into practice. Anyways, that's all I can think of for now. Happy Chess!

  21. You are definitely not bad right now though

  39. That is sure a wierd chess quote from Peter. What is the meaning and where did it come from?

    ReplyDelete
  40. it's from the 7th century quatrain of Nostradamus - maybe simply a comment on the "predictions" appearing on this blog - Molly Schneider

  42. Nostradomus's predictions were too wide, I studied it in social studies and they can happen on a lot of people.

  50. Celebrations always have an end.

    ReplyDelete
  51. What is that supposed to mean?!

    ReplyDelete
  52. the blog for this "halloween spook swiss" has been more than a bit spooky - I'm a little worried about what the "holiday hootenanny" blog will bring -

    ReplyDelete
  53. Anonymous, why are you so negative about everything? You never have anything good to say about anyone or anything so we would all appreciate it if you kept your miserable musings and personality to yourself. Either that or get some professional help. This club is for fun and mutual support. There is enough crap in this world to drag people down by accident, you don't really need to do it on purpose. It doesn't make you look clever in the least.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I really do not feel there are any negative comments here, so let's all try to be a little more upbeat.

I believe the post about this tournament being a little bit spooky was posted with some humor in mind and not with any negative thoughts in mind.

The post about all celebrations having to end is true about most things, so I am not really sure why it was posted.

Anyhow, as with e-mail, sometimes it is difficult to actually know the intent of a blog post -- someone's attempt at humor might seem like negative comments to another and vice-versa.

So let's all try to be socialable and enjoy the upcoming holidays and chess tournament that are ahead of us.

    Have a Happy Thanksgiving!!
