  1. Should be a great tournament. Both myself and Andrew are playing. If we get any pre-registration names, we will post them here.

  2. The names of preregistrations will be good. It is good to have ideas of who is going to play in this. Tell the organizeers to post some stuff.

  3. The secret to winning this tournament is probably not to eat too much turkey the day before!! I guess that greatly reduces my chances of winning!:)

  4. I'm organizing the tournament and will post the standings and round pairings on the waukeshachessclub.blogspot.com.

I'll post the preregistered players on thanksgiving day. Guy is the chief TD and will send me the info mid week.

  5. The Flyer does not indicate one way or the other whether masters get a compl EF. Perhaps the organizer can answer that question.

  6. My mistake -- the Flyer does indicate that masters get a compl EF.

  12. Very odd being at a WI tournment with no Jim Coons! Jim had family commitments so he had to skip this event.

Good to see SWCC's own Dave Sagunsky and Tom Fogec playing at a weekend tournament.

So far a tough tournment to be a favorite... lots of upsets.

It's a nice site, hopefully we'll see a few more players tommorrow. Anyone can still sign up with the 2byes that are allowed.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!

    Scott and John

  15. This was a strange tournament indeed. First off, congratulations to John Veech for winning the tournament. I hereby name this tournament “The Ghost Tournament.” Why? There was hardly anyone who showed up. The tournament seemed empty. Only 30 players came. Where was everyone? Where were all the Wisconsin chess players? They probably ate too much of that turkey and could not get out of bed Friday!:) This was a six-round, only two rounds per day, tournament -- not one of those where the brain has to think for three rounds!:) Next, the hotel was also empty -- the hotel seemed like a ghost hotel (other than the Ricelake Hockey team on Friday night). The lobby was empty and dark, no one in the restaurant or bar -- just eerie!!! Anyhow, it was a nice tournament and directed well, and hopefully next year it will have more players. Also, the playing conditions were excellent.

  16. Congrats to John and Brady! Nice tournament for both.

***EVERYONE, PLEASE PLAY THIS SATURDAY: www.wichessacademy.com has all info. NO GHOSTS PLEASE***

Robin, Thanksgiving events in WI have not drawn well in the past 15 years or so. NCO was a huge deal when I just came to WI (early 90's), but then attendace declined rapidly and never bounced back. Last time we had more than 100 players was the famous Roman Levit Memorial http://www.uschess.org/msa/XtblMain.php?200111252170.0-10270294
(John can look up the winner on his NCO trophy: GM Yury Shulman! sorry John, they engraved his name by mistake there, but the tournament was strong so it's fine).

NCO is famous for neat stories.... again, John can see the name Joseph Richards on his trophy, for example: Joe performed like a 2600 player at that event!

If you want an event with more people, then the weekend before Thanksgiving is a much better bet in our state.
    Alex

  17. Large rating gains for Harder, Edgar, and Rasmussen, who all seemed to be playing like masters! Congratulations on your rating gains.

  18. Congratulations to John Veech on another outstanding result. And thanks to Guy Hoffman for his usual excellent directing job. Southwest Chess Club accounted for 8 of the 31 entries. We just like to play chess.

  19. I heard that the prizes were adjusted in a odd way. There was an adjustment for only 30 of 50 showing (since the prize pool was based on 50). There were some prizes reduced by 40%, but some prizes were also added.

Is there a TD that can explain the prize pool rules, or is it totally at the discretion of the organizer to change the prizes?

    ReplyDelete
  20. I believe the rule book does cover the redistribution of prizes. However, you need to check with the organizer and director as to why and what they decided pertaining to this particular tournament.
