I couldn't believe my eyes when someone said "who is Sagunsky?" above. You gotta be kidding me! As if the name of David L. Sagunsky isn't known from the magnolia forests of Sheboygan to the pelican-encrusted mountains of Death Valley...from the cerulean oceans of landlocked Kalmykia to the tundra-clad slopes of snowy Guam! Honestly, you must be living in some Afghanistan cave not to know that David Sagunsky--with the *possible* exceptions of Fischer and Kasparov--is quite likely the greatest and most ingenious chessplayer of our time. ("Who's Sagunsky"! LOL that's rich....)

Mesgen Amanov played at a HCC a couple years ago.
ReplyDeleteAs far as real GMs go, Pan American Open had two (Yermolinsky, Gonzalez).
ReplyDeleteOh that's right Amanov is an imaginary GM...my mistake.
ReplyDeletenot imaginary, just bought his last GM norm in the infamous Aluzhta (Ukraine) events
ReplyDeleteYou don't really think he would still be without the GM title today without that tournament though...
ReplyDeleteSince that event he has not had a tournament that would have qualified for a GM norm. It's not easy to get that performance.
ReplyDeleteI'll take your word on that, but that's not the point. It's safe to say he probably would have not went to the same tournaments/ had the same results as if he were still searching for a final GM norm.

I hope to see ALL of you at Challenge XVII in April, 2013. Of course, one never knows what the future has in store for any of us, but Goddess willing, I will be there.
