"GM Josh Friedel will be playing."

Yes but what everyone wants to know is:

    Is Sagunsky going to play?

  4. I have heard from the Knights of the Square Table that Mr. Sagunsky is definitely participating in this fine tournament.

    ReplyDelete
  5. You're kidding about Josh Friedel - right. Right? Who the heck is Sagunsky????

    ReplyDelete
  6. Gee,im more populer then the referees in the Packers game.I hopenot as hated.

    ReplyDelete
  7. To the best of my knowledge Josh plans to play. Should be a strong event!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Thanks, Alex. All I really want to know is who was that tall dark well dressed and very suave man who sometimes mysterious seems to appear during the last couple of events - and is he married or otherwise attached????

    ReplyDelete
  9. P.S. Do you think GM Friedel will give me his autograph???

    ReplyDelete
  10. Jan,

I think you're thinking of Michael Shefsky.

PS, GM Josh Friedel has confirmed he will be playing!

  11. I couldn't believe my eyes when someone said "who is Sagunsky?" above. You gotta be kidding me! As if the name of David L. Sagunsky isn't known from the magnolia forests of Sheboygan to the pelican-encrusted mountains of Death Valley...from the cerulean oceans of landlocked Kalmykia to the tundra-clad slopes of snowy Guam! Honestly, you must be living in some Afghanistan cave not to know that David Sagunsky--with the *possible* exceptions of Fischer and Kasparov--is quite likely the greatest and most ingenious chessplayer of our time. ("Who's Sagunsky"! LOL that's rich....)

  12. Dear Anonymous,

No, not living in a cave in Afghanistan but I hope to go treasure hunting there one day, maybe for my 80th birthday...

  13. Please register early if possible -- it not only saves you a few dollars, but it helps us organize better. Remember that you can also register via e-mail, and then you can pay the entry fee at the playing site prior to 9:30 a.m. Thanks.

  14. Yay, we will have a GRANDMASTER in WI tournament! When was the last a GM played in our state?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Perhaps at the Pan-Am Collegiate Championships in 2010?

  17. Mesgen Amanov played at a HCC a couple years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  18. As far as real GMs go, Pan American Open had two (Yermolinsky, Gonzalez).

    ReplyDelete
  19. Oh that's right Amanov is an imaginary GM...my mistake.

    ReplyDelete
  20. not imaginary, just bought his last GM norm in the infamous Aluzhta (Ukraine) events

    ReplyDelete
  21. You don't really think he would still be without the GM title today without that tournament though...

    ReplyDelete
  22. Since that event he has not had a tournament that would have qualified for a GM norm. It's not easy to get that performance.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'll take your word on that, but that's not the point. It's safe to say he probably would have not went to the same tournaments/ had the same results as if he were still searching for a final GM norm.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Agreed. He is definitely not the weakest GM out there, so all is well.

  25. Is anyone willing to give a simul in Kenosha this Saturday from 12-2 at the library.

They are having some festivities for National Chess Day and they need someone who can help out.

I have no idea how many participants. They are looking for anyone who will do it.

If you are willing please email me at cwainscott@wi.rr.com

  26. I now have a volunteer for the simul!

  27. Comgrats to Tommy Uhlrich who held Mesgan Amanov to a draw in the Midwest Class Championships.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Good for Tommy! I heard rumors other masters are also going to be showing up for this tournament, but I think some of them are not talking so other players cannot prepare for them.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Also congrats to Alexander Velikanov who finished with 3.5/5 and earned $600+ for u2300 prize.

  30. Master Steve Tennent would like to play in this tournament. However, he needs a ride to and from. He lives in Orland Park (Southwest Suburbs of Chicago). His number is 703-403-5153. If anyone can help him out, he would appreciate it. Thanks.

  31. If it was regular pairings as of right now we would have a clash of the titans in the first round between Josh Friedel and David Sagunsky.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I heard Karklins is coming!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Accelerated pairings are very likely given the early entry numbers.

    ReplyDelete
  34. It's great that Karklins is coming, the more masters the better!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Thank you for organizing a GREAT event! Everything was fantastic!

  36. Hi to all!

I am so pleased by the record-breaking turnout of female players, and also the record-breaking payout of cash prizes to the chess femmes! Woo woo! Let's keep it up. I hope to see ALL of you at Challenge XVII in April, 2013. Of course, one never knows what the future has in store for any of us, but Goddess willing, I will be there.
