  1. Who will win the State Championship this year? Will we have a new champion or will Eric repeat? This should be a great tournament over the Labor Day weekend.

  2. A few changes this year - no more infinite time control! The time control is now 40/2 SD1 - other changes are it's now in Milwaukee, added a biggest upset prize, and I believe it's a larger prize fund.

Ashish hasn't done the greatest job getting fliers out about the tournament, but it can be seen on the USCF website

  3. Let's get as many SWCC members to play as possible. With so many vastly under-rated young players in our club it's a good opportunity to collect lots of rating points from the State pool. Also good experience to play someone new and not just the same players all the time.

  4. Ashish will have Flyers out soon. In the meantime, you can still send in your early entry fee to him. The address is on the USCF Website. Both myself and Andrew plan to play in this great State event.

  5. Can you post the up-to-date WI Tour standings? I have heard that the SWCC players are doing very well.

I can't seem to find any information on the WCA site.

  10. Hey Robin - It didn't seem to matter where you were on the list when you had your very good competitive tournament up in Green Bay

  16. Tommy S and Troy Z are both going to play in the Open Section.

Sorry Robin you are no longer the bottom seed :)

  17. It's been a bad tournament to be the favorite in the open section... lots of upsets so far.

Round 2 is still going on.

Santarius, Kane have 2 points; Parker and Richards were still playing when we left.

  21. In the final round in the Reserve Section, Andrew Grochowski executed a "smother mate" against Dave Sagunsky !! A thing of beauty !!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Did it involve a Sagunsky knight?

    ReplyDelete
  23. No, but it did involve Andrew's knight. Queen to b1+, rook takes on b1, and the knight to f2 mate!! Congratulations! You do not see those very often.

Also, Andrew wins the Reserve Section on tie breaks. Again, congratulations!

    Great tournament!!!

  24. Yes, the king was on h1 in that mate!

My last game went 6 hours and it ended up drawn. I played Jerry Zhou. We played an endgame where I had bishop and two pawns versus rook and one pawn. Great game also!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I guess I should clarify. It was late last night. Queen to g1+, white rook captures on g1 (king was on h1, and black knight was on h3), and then black knight to f2++ (mate).

    ReplyDelete
  26. Congratulations to Erik Santarius and Jeremy Kane for winning the Premier Section.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Congratulations to Yingming Liang for an outstanding tournament, losing only to the two co-champions and acquiring a 110 rating point gain!

    ReplyDelete
  28. And a big congratulations to Jeremy Kane for becoming Wisconsin's newest master!!!

  29. Jason Wagner, who won the traveling trophy in the Reserve Section last year, needs to return the trophy to the WCA so it can be awarded to this year's winner.

If anyone knows where Jason Wagner is, please have him get in touch with the WCA or myself.

    Thanks.
