A 2023 Wisconsin Chess Tour Event!

The 56th NORTHEASTERN Open Championship is open to players of all strengths.  All sections are US Chess rated.  US Chess membership is required.  Special two month memberships are available.  Late entries will be accepted at the site from 8:45 to 9:30 AM on Saturday, February 4th.  

Format:

The 2023 NORTHEASTERN will be held in three sections 

OPEN, RESERVE (open to players rated under 1500) and NOVICE (open to players rated under 1000).   Unrated players may enter any section.  Both OPEN and RESERVE groups will play FIVE games with Rounds at 10:00 – 2:30 – 7:30 Saturday, then 10:00 – 3:00 on Sunday.  Time Control is Game/120 d5.  A half-point Bye is allowed in any round.  Full-pt Bye to 2100+ in Rd. 1 if preregistered and requested.  

The Novice section plays SIX games with a Time Control of Game/60 d5.  Rounds are at 10:00 – 1:00 – 3:30 – 6:30 on Saturday.  10:00 and 1:00 on Sunday.  Two byes are allowed in the Novice section.

Sets and boards are furnished; please bring your chess clock.  NEWCA Procedural Rules will be in effect.  Pairings by WinTD.  The Chief Tournament Director will be Dennis Kosterman.

The Doubletree by Hilton, 150 S. Nicolet Rd., Appleton, is the host to our event.  If coming by Highway 41, take the College Ave. exit going west.  Reserve rooms early.  Hotel cutoff is January 4!  The rate is $87 guaranteed only until January 4.  You must mention the tournament to get this rate.  Make your reservation early and cancel within 48 hours before the tournament to avoid any fees if you decide not to play.  The hotel’s phone number is (920) 735-9955.  

We will be using the Grand Chute Ballroom (3600 sq. feet) for play.  The hotel offers an indoor pool and exercise room.  The restaurant is open for breakfast and dinner.  Additional dining options are a short drive away.  The Fox River Mall is a block away!

Entry fees:

The early Entry Fee for the OPEN section is $41; the RESERVE is $26; the NOVICE is $16 all if received by Tuesday, January 31th.  Online registration is available at https://www.kingregistration.com/event/NortheasternOpen56.   Entries that are received later or paid at site are all $7 more.  Masters receive a comp entry if pre-registered with the entry subtracted from any winnings.  Please make your check payable to:  Mike Nietman.  If you pre-register but then cannot play, your entry will be refunded only if you notify the TDs before the 1st round pairings are made at 9:30 AM on Saturday, February 4.
