The Club was overflowing with magic last night for the start of the Southwest Chess Club Championship. I even noticed Dave Sagunsky polishing up his “Sagunsky” knights with some Turtle Wax prior to Round One. It is not too late to join the excitement!!! Come on out next week and get in on all the stimulation!!!!!

Where is A. Parker?

Anonymous said...

Anthony played a simul at the club recently. Someone said he's been pretty busy.

Robin said...

Parker is working second shift so he cannot defend his title this year. So there will be a new Club Champion this year.

Here are the leaders playing next week after Round 1 and their tentative pairings for Round 2:

Pokorski (1733) v. Hayes (2100)
Becker, J (2050) v. Fogec (1623)
Sagunsky (1654) v. Veech (2038)
Becker, A (2010) v. Hildeman (1485)
Demler (1483) v. Cirillo (1826)
Grochowski, A (1788) v. Seghers, E (1404)
Neumann (1188) v. Grochowski, R (1680)

This weeks pairings should be interesting.

Is it too late for someone to enter the tournament with 2 half point byes?

Evan and Andrew's game from last week is posted on our LDMS school chess blog: http://ldmschess.blogspot.com
Evan is interested in any comments.

You can still enter the tournament, for ROUND 3, with 2 Half-Pt Byes. Contact

Hey, who won the Green bay tournament? Results from last round/crosstable?

The GBO results are now posted. By virtue of Parker's draw with Ashish, he was the clear winner with 4.5 / 5.0

Congrats Anthony!!!

Scott, thanks for all your on-site reporting over the weekend!

Important round tonight at the Club as the players start jockeying for position to make that final run at the Championship! I, myself, have to face off against Mr. Demler tonight, against who it is difficult to prepare, as Mr. Demler is know to use various opening moves with the white pieces.

Allen Becker takes control of his destiny last night the tournament with his draw last night.

If he wins his last two games, Allen will likely win yet another Club Championship.

Robin said...

There are three players tied with 3.5 for the lead with 2 rounds to go: Becker, Becker and Veech. There are also a handful of players with 3.0. So it is still too early to say who will win. Round 5 should bring some great games. Pairings should be posted soon.

Robin said...

Obviously, Allen Becker (3 time previous winner) has a good chance at clinching his fourth title. I believe the Las Vegas odds makers are listing the odds for the fourth time win as a 3 to 1 shot!

Mark Seghers said...

Great battles on the top 2 boards last night! On board 2, JB had 4 mins left when he trapped Evan's knight in a drawish endgame. Evan was very upset but I was very proud of his showing.
Great tournament so far guys, thanks for doing such a great job with things.

Anonymous said...

Hey Robin

Not that I would ever make such a bet, but what Vegas bookmaker can I call to get those odds?

JB said...

Actually, endgame on Bd. 2 was not "drawish". White had distinct advantage of 2 bishops, mobile pawns and better King position as Black's King was tied to defense of Q-side pawns. Fairly clear plan to enforce win, just takes awhile to execute due to limted material. All credit to Evan, he played a fine game, no reason for him to be upset. A loss should be looked on as an opportunity to learn and nothing else. Evan will improve his game more and faster by understanding the reasons why this game did not result in a draw as opposed to achieving a draw and not knowing why it wasn't a drawn position. He will soon be employing the same concepts to routinely win many games that he may have previously thought difficult to win.

Robin said...

I believe that the Golden Nugget is the place for chess/sports betting!:)

I was observing the game on board 2, and I agreed with JB that white had a nice advantage with the two bishops. If we could get the position we could possibly analyze it some and see if can find a possible save for black.

JB said...

Yes, that would be fun and instructive. Maybe there is something I overlooked.

Lupara (CC) said...

Robin, I'm laying twenty bucks that Becker wins on 8/6, I'm also laying another twenty that Becker draws. Either way, at worst I'm certain to break even, or I collect twice for the draw. : )

JB said...

Yeah, but you lose 10% on the vigorish!

Anonymous said...

It looks like the battle of the Beckers could decide the club champion.

JB said...

Still 2 games to go.....any of 8 or so players have a chance.

Anonymous said...

The Battle of the Beckers.... I like it! Sorry we are going to miss it.

John is playing at the US Open in Indianapolis (along with his good friends Tommy Schnieder and Troy Zimmermann).

Good luck to all!

See you for the last round.

We are doing our summer lecture series and it is very informative. We would like more players to show up, especially the younger players. This is basically an hour of chess instruction from a higher rated player for free. I encourage more attendance at our summer lectures. This week Allen Becker will be presenting the lecture. Hope to see more players this Thursday.

Robin said...

Big Round 5 match ups between the two Beckers this week. I, myself, have to go up against Hayes. Should be some good chess this coming Thursday!

Robin said...

The games on Boards 3, 4 and 5 should also be good. If one looks at the ratings, the games look one-sided, however, Zhou, Gaddameedi, and Seghers are all unrated and play very good.

Anonymous said...

I think Robin meant to say underrated.

Good luck to all. We'll be getting the blog for the results!

Anonymous said...

I'm sure the Becker-Evans game was not equal but the advantage that White had was slight. If anyone noticed, Evan is pretty bad at manoeuvring his knight.

No offense Evan just a comment.

Robin said...

As Scott pointed out, I did mean to say “underrated.”

This week’s lecture is on endgames! Whoever does not need endgame instruction raise your hand. Just what I thought -- see everybody on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. for some much needed instruction.

I have heard some of the younger players saying they do not come to the lectures because they are too boring; however, from what I have seen in practice over the board, that is the weakest part of a younger players’ game.

We have an Expert giving a free one-hour class on endgames, please come and take advantage of this free valuable chess instruction. Thanks.

JB said...

Wow....That was a blast. I'm fried!

Becker vs Becker, what a fantastic game !! I really enjoyed it !!

JB said...

Thanks, Allen and I worked it out beforehand. ;)

Mark Seghers said...

I think a general rule for blog posts is to avoid generalizing and using words like "bad" if you choose to be anonymous. If you believe Evan's knight play to be bad, it would be fair to #1 identify yourself, and #2 explain your stance. I'm sure Evan would appreciate that, and I think it's just good manners.

Last night, Evan found a 3fold repetition against Coons, and Reid won against Penkwitz. I'm very proud of them both as a Dad, and would like to thank their gracious and sportsmanlike opponents throughout. The SWCC rocks!

Hey guys, sorry to say, the Seghers (Evan, Reid and Dad/Mark) will be on vacation next week in Eagle River and will miss round 6. Thanks again for such a great tournament!

JB said...

Hear! Hear! Mark,

I agree with your comment. Anything posted anonymously must be taken with a grain of salt since we have no idea whether they know what they're talking about or not. Especially when a critical comment is made. And even more so when it is directed to a young promising player. Just bad manners I guess. Anyways have fun and congrats to the boys on a strong showing!!

Anonymous said...

Wow - six way tie for 1st going into the last round. It looks like we missed a really exciting round 5.

Round 6 should bring some real interesting battles.

Scott

Lupara (CC) said...

It figures, I make my wager on the Becker/Becker draw and double my money and now one of the participants puts that in jeopardy by hinting it was all prearranged. The gaming authorities are investigating and have indicated that this has shades of Fischer's accusation against Kasparov and Karpov.

Yeah. Right. Sure. Whatever. : )

On a more serious note, JB played much like he used to play in the mid 1980s. "Material be damned, full speed ahead." And kudos to Allen for his cool defense.

Good stuff.

Tom said...

Mark, You are rightly proud of your two sons. They had excellent results against strong competition. Their ratings have yet to catch up with their true strength. My congratulations to both on a good tournament. Tom

I for one would like to see the Becker vs Becker game posted somewhere as I was unable to stick around to see how it finished. Is this at all possible?

I would like to suggest that the best way to resolve a tie ,if it happens (only for the overall champion), would be a playoff with a bidding procedure to determine who gets white. It's probably not going to be something to use for this years championship, but I think it would be a lot of fun to watch. Although it might involve a bit of logistics, scheduling it right before the next weeks action tournament, or prior to 2nd round of a swiss could be workable and would allow for a lot of the club members to be able to watch. I believe that tie breakers were going to be used at the Junior Open, but the players decided (with the organizers consent)that it would be more fun/better to have a playoff.

I personally have never been a big fan of tie breakers, as they are source of lot of confusion and are anticlimatic.

I'm sure that many of you will agree and disagree, so let's hear from you to see if I'm just wrong again.

Scott V

P.S. For those of you that will say that I'm only proposing it because John's not likely to win a tiebreaker, that's not the case as my crystal ball is just not that good (too many variables, still a round to go, so many things can change).

Anonymous said...

Scott how are john and co. doing at u.s. open?

Anonymous said...

It has been a odd tournament.

Tommy and Troy started out with a full point byes because Tommy wasn't paired and Troy 's opponent was signed up to play in the 4 day, not the 6 day. They both had tough (much higher rated opponents) pairings. Yesterday was a good day, Tommy now has 3/7, and Troy has 3.5 /7

John has a "soft" 5/7. He started out losing 2 of his 1st 3. He has only played one player higher rated than him the whole tournament (which was a floored master last round).

Many WI players are playing. From memory, Guy Hoffman is playing well with a number of draws. We have seen Rohan who I believe has 3/7. The Liangs have had some big wins/upsets, but also lots of talk about their overall talent.

Hongkai Pan (from Madison West) has 4.5 /7. Steffan Thime (formerly of Madison, now living in IN) has 3/7. Aaron Jing has a 2.5/7.

I'm happy to report that their have been no broken bones!

What is Turtle Wax???

Robin said...

Turtle Wax is an automotive appearance product (wax), which leaves things very shiny and cleans up small scuff marks and dirt to make automobiles and chess pieces look like they are brand new. It also makes them water resistant (to a certain decree).
