The Southwest Chess Club (SWCC) has decided to run a 2-day tournament this summer. The main reason SWCC is organizing this tournament is because you (the chess players of Wisconsin) have asked us to do this (a 2-day tournament) for many years now. So we hope everybody can come out and play this summer at our tournament, so we can continue this tournament for many years into the future. Thanks for your support.
Is there a list of pre entries yet?
Will Michael R Brown be there?
Whatever happened to King Plato Christian (AKA) Dan Smith
Can you play up a section?
Yes, except for the Master/Expert Section. You must be rated 2000 or above to play in the Master/Expert Section.
Please register early if possible -- it not only saves you a few dollars, but it helps us organize better. Remember that you can register via e-mail, and then you can pay at the playing site prior to 9:30 a.m. Thanks.
Anyone ever regularly play the pure Scheveningen Sicilian without a6?
I'm wondering if anyone has a book on it?!
I believe in the Scheveningen Sicilian, black eventually has to play ...a6. If black does not play it on move 6, it probably gets played before move 11 in most cases. It is just a good move for black in that defense and probably should almost always be played.
For clarification I meant no a6 on move five or six (i.e. not the Najdorf/Scheveningen hybrid).
Essentially the lines that Ray Robson plays. Especially the 6. g4 e5 lines.
I just think that they're interesting. I don't think I'd ever play a pure Scheveningen...
Looks like this will be another well attended event...wish I could play!
Updates? Who's ahead in the Sections after Round 2?
Bill Williams is showing that an old lion can still have teeth as he was the only 2-0 start in the master/expert section!
Any updates?
What a great turn-out and we're so happy at Goddesschess for the number of female players who came out in support of this tournament! Congratulations to all of the prize winners/top finishers.
I have never understood prize funds... but I thought if the tournament was based on 40 paid entries and there were roughly 70 paid entries, the prizes would be increased proportionally.
Could one of the TD's explain the rule?
Thanks.
Congrats on the great turnout!
Thanks for a well-organized GREAT EVENT!!
Thank you for a great tournament! I hope this will become a yearly tournament.
Regarding the based on 40 question: The based on 40 was picked to determine the level of loss the chess club was willing to incur (without destroying itself financially), if very few people entered this first time event.. Entries above that lessen the loss we sustain. The Southwest Chess Club has a reputation for increasing prize funds when entries versus prizes and expenses allow us to do so.
Please, next time mention your name at the conclusion of your entry, even if posting as Anonymous.
Who won best game prize?
Hi Tom,
That info you provided answered a question I'd wondered about too. I've been reading and writing about chess events and chessplayers for 13 plus years, and the intracacies of organizing a tournament and how prizes are funded in the absence of a sponsor or sponsors is a big mystery to me! So, now that we know that Southwest continues to fund tournaments in which it loses money to a greater or lesser extent, the question is - WHY DO YOU DO IT! Well, I guess I know the answer to that, but not where the money comes from that covers the loss. It has to take much more money to fund the facilities at the hotel PLUS the prizes offered at the 2x a year Hales Corners Chess Challenge and now the Milwaukee Challenge than what you receive in Club dues every six months! It's still a mystery to me, but thank you for doing it! Would it be considered de trop to advertise what the Club's "break even" point might be at a given tournament? Maybe it would encourage more chess lovers to come out and play, just to help out the bottom line. Don't know, but what would it hurt? Things to ponder.
What great men,---Robin and his son, Tom, Allen and more...
Don't focus on the $40, $25 money you paid please! a little watch what those great people did and doing... time, effort....
I respect those people
LA
