is it 5 or 6 second delay?

Tom said...

It is a 6 second delay. That enables the tournament to retain eligibility for JGP (Junior Grand Prix) Points.

Anonymous said...

22nd annual MIDWEST CLASS CHAMPIONSHIPS changed to the same weekend, Oct 11-13. Should HCC be changed to the following weekend, Oct 19?

Robin said...

It is too late to change it. The Midwest Class Championships should not have changed their dates to coincide with our tournament. The Midwest Class Championship needs to change their dates back to the way they had them. This was not very nice of them to do this to us at the last moment! We can only hope that Wisconsin chess players will support Wisconsin chess, especially in a case like this.

Anonymous said...

With a 6 second delay, does that mean it will only be regular rated or is it quick rated too?

Robin said...

It will only be regular rated this time. If it was regular and quick rated, then we would not be eligible for JGP (Junior Grand Prix) Points. We would like to hear from players what is more important to them, that the tournament remain regular/quick rated, or that it retain the JGP qualification. Unfortunately, it cannot do both. The JGP is only eligible if it is regular rated only. So please let us know what you would prefer and which one is more important. We welcome comments on this. Thanks.

Jim Ulrich said...

We like the JGP ratings better.

Anonymous said...

I prefer it stay dual rated.

cryptic_tutor said...

I obviously don't care about JGP, but on the other hand, I'm not really concerned about quick ratings either...

For those at the tournament, the TD should remind everyone before starting that it's a 6 second delay. This is pretty unusual and easy to forget.

Jan Newton has announced that Goddesschess will be sponsoring a Best Game Prize for this event in the amount of $50. Players in both sections can submit games for this prize. Both female and male players are eligible !! Thank you Jan !!

A death in the family prevents his participation this Saturday.

I have a choice to play in any section! Looking at the Open section and it just looks to difficult. It's not worth my time to play at this event unless................

I get to play Gary Wright!

Anonymous said...

Be careful what you ask for Ben. Gary gained over 100 points in his last tournament !!

Anand Enters Hales Corners Challenge XVIII !!! Check it out on the list of pre-entries.

Probably as a warm up to the November match!

Weather indicates a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms on Saturday. So I would say a perfect day to play some chess!

Jan said...

Hola everyone!

I hope you will also view this post I did at the Goddesschess blog and if you're impatient, please scroll down to the last sentence or two for a very special surprise JUST FOR THE CHESS DUDES who will be playing in Challenge XVIII this Saturday. Love from Goddesschess :) http://goddesschess.blogspot.com/2013/10/crazy.html

As a special one-off prize for this event only, Goddesschess is giving a $100 gift card to the top male finisher in the Open and a $50 gift card to the top male finisher in the Reserve. If there is a tie, tie-breaks will determine the winner(s) of the cards. Thank you Goddesschess!

Very generous of Jan to once again sponsor Goddess Chess prizes and a bonus for the gentlemen in HCC XVIII. Caissa surely does favor the challenge!

Sadly I had to leave after my first game as I forgot to leave my wife the key to the house we're moving in to next Sat...

Nice tournament, but I should not have worn shorts as it was cool when the air conditioning came on.
Tough competition and special thanks to our hard working TDs!

Was an excellent tournament!

Congratulations to all of the prize-winners. It was good to see so many of you and visit with some of you again. I had lots of fun despite my pounding headache and miserable score - well, hey, I did get a draw againt a 1300 player and I was thrilled about that! Will prize awards be published here?

As always, a great tournament. Congratulations to the winners. The 6-second delay was novel, but of little consequence to me.

(1.0) Ellen Wanek - $20
(1.0) Neha Mhaskar - $20

Free Entries: $70 (Top female player from each Section in Challenge XVII)

Best Game Prize: $50 (Open to all players)

Total paid out is $800 (this does not include the $150 in special prizes that went to the top male finisher in each Section in honor of my Don McLean and National Chess Day).

Ben Smail, the Top Male finisher in the Open Section received a $100 gift card from Goddesschess and Xavier Loomer, the Top Male finisher in the Reserve Section received a $50 gift card from Goddesschess.
