The State Championship is an event not to be missed! Both myself and Andrew will be playing in it again. Hope to see a lot of Wisconsin chess players at the Championship! If I get any pre-entry information, I will post it as it becomes available.

Question of the day

Is it better to have the state championship move around to different cities every year or hold it in the Milwaukee area where most of the players live?

It's too bad its not back in the Milwaukee / Waukesha area. I suspect that will lower attendance.

Do the 2003 and the 2004 champs even have ratings?

I think that the Grochowski's bribed the WCA to have the tourney in Madison so they can see Andrew!!!

I hear nothing; I see nothing; I know nothing!:)

My goal is to win the State Championship!!!

I also hear that Jim Coons is playing, so everyone can start booking up for him!:)

Bryan and Yuan are strong experts, Larry is a strong A-class player.

I'm not sure what WCA was thinking. Perhaps the 2 fall Madison tournaments are going to happen (there are not on the their website.... but the WCA is so completely worthless), but Milwaukee has lost a number of tournaments. It seems like it's down to just the 2 Hales Corners challenges now.

WCA should had held the tournament in Milwaukee this year.

I predict...

that a number of players from last years Closed championship play at the IL Open instead.

At least two masters (Betaneli and Santarius) will be playing.

Are you expecting to get any more pre-entries or is Guy being Guy and withholding the info?

Robin said...

I am expecting to get no more pre-entries.

Anonymous said...

Any idea why Guy Hoffman is so against releasing re-entries?

Big article on the Labor Day Madness... but no mention of the WI State Championship. Disappointing.

Why? Because it's "closed" - not an open tournament? Why exactly is it a closed tournament? Is the WCA, the organizer, afraid that some out of state players are coming to come and win?
Another legacy issue to get solved (at least last year they finally the time control to sudden death tine control). Perhaps WCA can reconsider at it's annual meeting.

You're exactly right. It doesn't make sense for someone who never lived in WI before to be crowned the "Wisconsin State Champion" and there's a lot of other masters, IMs and GMs who can possibly come and win this tournament. Many other states also have their version of a closed championship to determine their state champion.

I guess it is possible to open the tournament up to everyone, including players from other states, and then make it clear that whoever the highest finishing player is from Wisconsin would be the official Wisconsin State Champion, regardless of who finishes first in the money.

In the Reserve U1800 Section there are 3 people with 2 points after two rounds, including Andrew Grochowski and Rodney Draves.

The Open section has a strong group of players, but some upsets, so to speak, are a draw in round one to dethrone Santarius from board 1.

My dad, Robin Grochowski, has half a point after 2 rounds.

John Becker vs. Alex Betaneli on Board 1, Round 2; Wild game, Alex had to take a draw by perpetual in order to avoid being mated!
