A nice game by Allen Becker in Rd 3. Had a good time analyzing it with him, Robin Grochowski, and NM Nolan Hendrickson. SWCC always has a very high calibre of play and players.

It is nice to have some analysis after the game - especially with a master present. It is just a shame that there isn't more awareness of noise levels with respect to the games that are still being played. I could hear that particular discussion from the other side of the hall. I guess Ray Hayes has the right idea with the ear plugs.

Anonymous said...

Usually SWCC controls the noise pretty well. Waukesha club is a different story.... even during their official tournaments chattering is a norm.

Anonymous said...

Both clubs can be great! However they do both have ups and downs. Like many other things, waukeshau is only worse because Nickel pauses the games to collect money. What kind of club is that?
Highly distracting and almost disrespectful. Is it really that difficult to do this before they even begin geez what a penny pincher hey, i bet he does it inbetween to get every last dollar from late arrivals! :)

Anonymous said...

Way to go Matt ! Nice job advertising that your presence at the club begets noisiness and lack of appreciation for people trying to concentrate: Patzer's they never learn.

Anonymous said...

Using the excuse that SWCC is less noisy than another club is hardly the solution. Either way it goes one should practice under distacting conditions to be prepared for anything perhaps. Over all both clubs have been quite beneficial for many players to shoot up to 2200! Alot could be changed to make both clubs more productive as well as more enjoyable. For the record chess clubs aren't really serious tournament atmospheres it seems. Although we all love them! Some of you might be better off entering some real tournament's with skittles rooms in seperate locations, since you have these complaints.

I think we should feature a metal band like Metallica.

A club is a social organization. IMO, SWCC has a great culture; it's well worth "enduring" a bit of noise from time to time. Great to see Matt and Nolan back in WI. Would have been fun to sit in on that analysis session.

Chris said...

Any time I hear people chatting I think about two things...

a) I hope they're enjoying their conversation, and

b) This is a lot less noisy than that time when the cops were using the shooting range...

can't the hall by the stair way be uesd then the doors could be closed muffling most of the sound

Chess clubs include skittles players. Sometimes they laugh or say something to each other and sometimes it is a little to loud. No one expects a chess club to not allow them to be there. They are members too.

Everybody knows that playing at a chess club is not the same as playing in a weekend tournament. Chess clubs have analyze going on, skittles games, social activity, etc., so there is going to be more outside noise at a chess club. That is just the nature of the beast! That being said, the swcc is one of the best I have seen.

There is a social aspect surrounding chess - no doubt about that - we make friendships with players me meet with at the club and SWCC definitely encourages that. Chess itself is not social in nature though. Verbal communication is not required at all to play the game. You would be thrown out of a tournament for continuously speaking to your opponent during a tournament. We do not speak to our opponent during a rated game except to quietly announce check or to offer a draw. It is not uncommon to sit for three hours or more without uttering a single word. As for friendly games, if you want to have a loud and animated discussion, maybe a less civilized game like bowling would be more appropriate. Either that or meet a friend at a coffee shop or a bar for a game. Not everyone has the attention span to sit still or be quiet for extended periods of time. Nobody expects it to be like a library, but there is no reason for volume levels to be such that they disturb other players. The same goes for slamming down pieces an banging on the clocks like this is martial arts. If it is not a problem at our club, then why do we hear shhhhhhhhh! several times during almost every match? We can all learn to be a bit more aware in my opinion, but of course, mine is just one of many. Was that comment about the shooting range for real? That one made me chuckle.

Tom said...

Yes, it definitely happened !!

Chris said...

Yeah, the shooting range thing was out of control.

Then Robin, in true TD fashion, went and asked the cops to keep quiet.

What Botvinnik used to do: Play training games with a radio blaring and and an oppoenent blowing smoke in his face so he would be ready to play in a noisy hall.

What Botvinnik didn't do: Complain anonymously on the internet.

We had four forfeitures last night!! It is terrible that players cannot phone or e-mail if they cannot make it so that others do not have to sit for an hour and wait for a game that is not going to happen. Just one phone call or e-mail, and we can repair so all the players in the tournament who are present can have a game.

Robin said...

Please get your games into me for the best game prizes in the next few days. Thanks.
I ended up with four draws in this tournament!:)

Botvinnik said...

The anonymous comments were from me, and that story about my radio training regimen have been greatly exaggerated. The smoke in the face was good conditioning for my match with Tal though so you might have a point there.

Sincerely,
Botvinnik

I think we need more noise at the chess clubs to help prepare us for weekend tournaments where there are often weddings and other distractions. Maybe if noise was more common you would learn to focus better.

Anonymous said...

The problem with the Southwest club site is that cell phones can't pick up a signal in the basement and we don't get enough cell phones ringing during the games.

Anonymous said...

Maybe the chess clock manufacturers should have the clocks play a song when the time expires.

Perhaps Taps!:)
