Nowadays there is more dynamism in chess, modern players like to take the initiative. Usually they are poor defenders though.
Boris Spassky
OK, but what year was that quote made??
Probably before Carlsen was born...
An exciting evening of quick chess and interesting games! Nice to see everyone and hoping you can make it on Saturday for the ORCA Winter Seasonal.
I stopped by the club to watch a couple of the games and was particularly impressed by Hilderman's handling of his game against Bill Williams. He was up a rook in the ending, but was already getting into time trouble. For the last dozen or so moves he had only one second on the clock (with the increment). Bill showed his experience and kept posing problems for opponent, but Hilderman kept his head and managed to mate with the rook and the kings standing in opposition. I was counting the seconds and I think at one point he must have been within a second of forfeiting. Nail biting stuff and great chess all round.
