Are any experts and masters signed up?

Information: I have been informed that in this tournament there is going to be a closed section for the experts and masters. This means anybody rated under 2000 will not be able to play in that section. Please call Ben for more details.

That's actually not legal. The event is advertised in Chess Life (see below). I will make sure USCF knows and revokes Ben's organizing and directing privileges.

To clear the air, the closed section is an invite section only. I did not advertise it because its not a section you can sign up for. I'm currently only inviting Masters and Experts to play in this section. If I have a open spot that hasn't been filled by the end of the registration. Then I will open that spot up to a player that shows the most interest to play with the M/X.

I do apologize to everyone about not having it advertize. I didn't think it would be a big deal to anyone. If I do run this next year. I will then advertize the invited/closed section only. Please feel free to call me if you have any questions.

While I personally have extremely strong feelings about the closed section because it feels like something of a bait and switch, I think that the person who is anonymously threatening Ben is pretty much gutless.

If you have something to say stand up and say it with your name.

Otherwise, go away. The chess community doesn't need you.

Indeed, it's pretty strange to threaten a person who is clearly trying to do something good. That being said though, if one states in promotional materials that there is an Open section, then organizing a closed event at the same time creates difficulties. One of the appeals for A class players is the chance to meet stronger players. Imagine a 1900 entering the tournament, booking hotel, clearing the weekend schedule, and showing up only to discover that all the stronger players have their own section! Just spell what you are doing on the official flyer next time.

Of course, I would have been delighted to play in the closed section and NOT face the A class players hungry for rating points! Alas, this date just doesn't work. Good luck to Ben with the event!

Unknown said...

Doubtful lol

Alex Betaneli said...

Troy, maybe you can sign up for a 1/2 point bye as well for the tremendous 1.5 total!

See, at least Alex has the decency to leave a name when insulting me.

Just prove the anonymous wrong. :-)

I got an email about a chess player from Shorewood is interested in playing in this tournament but needs a ride. If anyone is interested, please email me.

Chris said...

After not being able to play tonight I am really looking forward to Saturday.

Still looking to fill the last spot for the closed section. I'm going to open that last spot up to the public to battle out for. First you need to be registered in the open section. After Registration has closed (about 9:30) we will have a little bidding contest and the person with the highest bid can fill the last spot in the closed section and will be removed from the open section.

That's an ugly idea which is likely to rub a few people the wrong way. I love one day events, but will opt out of this one. That said, I can't complain too loudly about someone organizing a chess tournament. The more the better!

Southwest Chess Club said...

Maybe a better idea is to simply offer the last spot to the highest-rated player in the Open who is interested in playing?

I too love 1-day events, and am thankful to Ben for organizing this one.

I guess I could do that too.
