John Becker, 2009 SWCC Club Champion: Lecture and Simul (1 July 2010)

John Becker gave a great lecture, showing three of his games.  They were full of tactics and surprises, and reminded us to strive for play and complexity in our games.  John played several club members.

Jeff Pokorski and Tim Burton won their games, while Jim Coons, Alan Buschmann, and Shiva Suri drew with John Becker.

John will be defending his title at The 2010 Joe Crothers Memorial SWCC Championship, starting next week!

Joe Crothers Passes Away

It is with great sadness that I must inform you that Joe Crothers, President of the Southwest Chess Club, has passed away. Joe collapsed Sunday evening while playing chess at the Southwest Chess Club pavilion at Polish Fest and died later at the hospital. He was a wise and valued leader of our club and will be greatly missed. Arrangements are still pending, but likely to appear in tomorow's Journal Sentinel. Tom Fogec/Southwest Chess Club

GM Yermolinsky Lecture/Simul at SWCC ! - Feb. 11

GM Alex Yermolinsky is coming to SWCC on February 11. Lecture 6:30, Simul 7:30-10:30. $10/board. Tw0-time US Chess Champion, GM Yermolinsky recently tied for 1st in the North American Open in Las Vegas, December 2009. Alex Yermolinsky was born in the former Soviet Union. After leaving it he spent a short time in Italy before moving to the USA. Awarded the IM title in 1990 he became a GM in 1992. He has won the US Championship twice, in 1993 (shared with Alexander Shabalov) and in 1996. He's also played on the US Olympiad team. He has several books in print and works as a chemist for a pharmaceutical company in California.

SWCC Schedule Update

An updated schedule will be posted to the club website during the Club Championship.


Thursday events are held at St. James Catholic Church in the lower level of the Parish Center building (immediately in front of the church). The address is 7219 South 27th Street in Franklin. Parking in rear, enter through south door. Hours: 6-11 p.m. Thursday tournament Registration: 6- 6:55 p.m. Games begin at 7 p.m.

Every Thursday, you can either join in the action, or play a friendly game, some skittles, or arrange a match, a tournament, or an extra rated game. Ask a Tournament Director for assistance (Allen Becker, Tom Fogec, Robin Grochowski, or Sheldon Gelbart).

6-Round Swiss in One Section. Game/100. USCF Rated. EF: $7 (must be a member to participate). SWCC Membership $10 (can join prior to first round). (Two ½ point byes available in rounds 1 through 5 if requested at least 2-days in advance; no byes available for round 6.) TD is Becker; ATD is Grochowski.

SOUTHWEST CHESS CLUB ---NEW LOCATION

The Southwest Chess Club has found a new home. Starting Thursday, January 8, 2009 we will be meeting at St. James Catholic Church in the lower level of the Parish Center building, which is immediately in front of the church. The address is 7219 South 27th Street in Franklin. The location is on the west side of 27th Street, just south of Rawson Avenue. Please park behind the Parish Center building. Enter only through the south entrance. Proceed down the stairs to the hall where we will be playing chess. Check the Southwest Chess Club website for a map and schedule of events.

New Club Location for Summer 2008 !

The Southwest Chess Club meets every Thursday night from 6:00 PM in the town of Greendale, Wisconsin. We meet at the Layton State Bank (downstairs), at 5850 Broad Street.

Due to flooding problems, our Hales Corners Village Hall location is not available until Sept.-Oct. 2008. We will meet at the Greendale Layton State Bank until further notice.

In a recent OTB game, I (playing white) reached the following position:


I spent too much time debating whether to take black's bishop with my pawn (dxe5) or my castle (Rxe5). I took with my castle. I took with the castle (Rxe5) because I was concerned that in the upcoming endgame, I did not want my bishop blocked with my own pawns. I did not want a bad bishop later in an endgame.
Any ideas from anyone whether Rxe5 was the best move? Perhaps taking with the pawn would have been better? But if taking with the pawn is better, why is it better?
